GIE Media’s Horticulture Group Announces Promotions

(Richfield, Ohio) – GIE Media, Inc. is pleased to announce a series of exciting changes to the staff of its Horticulture Media Group, which includes print and digital magazines Lawn & Landscape, Golf Course Industry, Nursery Management & Production, Greenhouse Management & Production, Garden Center and GIE Media’s Snow magazine. The group also publishes leading websites and e-newsletters serving each of these titles.

Award winning journalist and nursery industry veteran Todd Davis has joined GIE Media as editorial director and publisher of Nursery Management & Production magazine, and will also serve as editorial director of its sister publication Greenhouse Management & Production magazine. Todd will have full editorial and business responsibilities for GIE Media’s print and interactive media products serving the field crop tree & ornamental nursery industry.

Davis began his B2B media career with Branch-Smith Publishing in 1994, writing for the company's family of horticulture trade publications. In 2000, he became editor of Nursery Management & Production and helped shape the magazine into the No. 1 trade publication in the nursery industry. During his successful tenure with Branch-Smith Publishing, Davis visited more than 450 horticultural facilities across the United States, Canada and Europe. In 2006, he was awarded the Southern Nursery Association Pinnacle Award for his contributions to the industry.

Davis joined Skinner Nurseries as branch manager of the company's Garland, Texas, location in 2007. A year later, the branch won the company's Bryant Skinner Sr. Customer Service Award, achieving the company's highest service benchmarks. Skinner Nurseries was acquired by Shemin Nurseries earlier this year just prior to Davis joining GIE Media.

Yale Youngblood, editor of Garden Center magazine, has been promoted to editor/publisher. Yale will head up all editorial and business management responsibilities for Garden Center and all print and interactive products in that GIE Media portfolio.

Youngblood has been part of the GIE Media team since 2008, when the Richfield, Ohio, company purchased Texas-based Branch-Smith Publishing, which included Garden Center magazine and its sister magazines Nursery Management & Production and Greenhouse Management & Production. Prior to that, he was editor of Garden Center Products & Supplies from its inception in 1994. Youngblood has been in the publishing business for 30-plus years, winning numerous awards.

Chuck Bowen has been promoted to editor of Lawn & Landscape magazine. Chuck was previously promoted to associate editor of Lawn & Landscape in early 2009, managing editor in January 2010, and now has full editorial responsibilities. Prior to his Lawn & Landscape responsibilities, Bowen spent two years on the editorial staff of PCT magazine, one of GIE Media’s industry-leading enterprises.

Brian Horn has joined Lawn & Landscape magazine as associate editor. He was previously associate editor at Smart Business magazine in Westlake, Ohio, where he wrote and edited a number of cover stories, and interviewed the likes of George Zimmer, CEO of The Men’s Wearhouse, and Anthony Alexander, CEO of FirstEnergy. He brings a strong background in business writing and magazine publishing.

Jim Gilbride has been promoted to Associate Publisher of Greenhouse Management & Production magazine. Gilbride joined GIE Media in 2004 as a regional account manager for Commercial Dealer magazine. Within a year, he was moved to PCT, and then promoted to national sales manager of Branch-Smith Publishing titles in 2009 following their acquisition by GIE Media. Gilbride will be responsible for managing GIE Media’s marketing and sales in the greenhouse market, in addition to major account sales to specialty chemical and national horticultural accounts in greenhouse, nursery, garden center and landscape markets.

Dave Szy has been promoted to national sales manager of Lawn & Landscape magazine, and associate publisher of GIE Media’s SNOW magazine. Szy joined GIE Media in 2002 as a regional account sales representative. Dave was a key driver in GIE’s launch of SNOW magazine and GIE Media’s snow precipitation futures partnership with Chicago based CWB. Dave’s strong sales performance and deep market knowledge in several of GIE Media markets, including our landscape contractor, golf course management and snow management markets, has earned him these new business management responsibilities.

“We are excited about these high-caliber additions to our management team,” said GIE Media’s president and COO, Chris Foster. “Their industry expertise and great relationships with clients across the green industry will take our already strong, market-leading portfolio to a new level of market service and business success.”
